What happened between Canelo Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya? Feud explained

What happened between Canelo Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya? Feud explainedRyan Hafey & Esther Lin / Premier Boxing Champions

Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez will head to Saudi Arabia for the first time to face William Scull this May, live on DAZN, but many will be wondering if Oscar De La Hoya will be there too.

The Golden Boy boss was once the Mexican's foremost champion as promoter, but a falling-out between the pair led to a split some years ago now over various matters.

Ahead of last May's win over Jaime Munguia, Canelo and De La Hoya traded barbs in front of the media at a main event press conference.

Now, ahead of his latest fight, step back in time and relive the event as the two almost came to blows and had to be kept apart by security.

What happened between Canelo Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya at the press conference?

When this contest between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Jaime Munguia was first announced, it raised eyebrows with Alvarez facing a fighter in Munguia who is represented by Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions.

Alvarez spent most of his professional boxing career under the Golden Boy banner before the two parties were involved in a messy split back in 2020.

With Alvarez and De La Hoya in the same room at Wednesday's press conference, the latter decided to send a message to the undisputed champion at super middleweight.

“I have nothing but respect for Canelo Alvarez as a fighter; his record and abilities speak for themselves,” De La Hoya said.

“But he has spent much of the last two months insulting me rather than promoting this fight. Yes, I’ve faced a lot of challenges in my life. Yes, I’ve been to rehab several times. And yes there were times when work was not my priority based on my mental health, which I neglected for so long.

“But that doesn’t change the fact that Golden Boy built Canelo Alvarez – period. The company you fought under for decades has always had one name and it’s mine… so put some f—g respect on it.”

It was no surprise that Alvarez became irritated and responded to De La Hoya's outburst.

"Don’t you talk to me like that,” Alvarez began.

“Don’t you f—n' talk to me like that!”

Alvarez then went on to make some shock accusations of his own towards De La Hoya.

"He tried to steal money and he’s a f—g asshole,” Alvarez continued.

“He tried to keep the attention for him, not for Munguia. F—g p—y! Mother f—r!”

Alvarez and De La Hoya then attempted to go face-to-face, but security were forced to step in between the pair before the press conference could continue.
