Scott McTominay has continued to endear himself to Serie A and Napoli by being named the league's Player of the Year.

At last night's glamorous ceremony in Milan, the midfielder followed in the footsteps of such legendary names as Zinedine Zidane and Cristiano Ronaldo by bagging the Player of the Year gong, and was also voted in the league's team of the season.

He becomes the first Scot to win the award after a 2024-25 campaign that saw him score 12 goals and lay on six assists as Napoli won the Scudetto.

Proving that performance wasn't a one-season wonder, McTominay carried that form into the current campaign, helping Napoli to the top of the league, level on points with leaders Milan.

His rise to become a core part of Antonio Conte's team and one of Europe's best midfielders has been one of the stories of the season in Serie A.

His exploits have surprised many, who didn't expect McTominay to reach the heights that he has after leaving Manchester United.

The player's performances for both club and country have impressed fellow countryman and former striker, Paul Dickov, who has so much respect for what the 28-year-old has achieved in Naples.

"I can't tell you how much credit and how much respect I've got for Scott," he exclusively told DAZN News, thanks to Casino Groups.

"The way he's handled the disappointment of leaving Man United. Because it did hurt him, because that's the club where he was for a long, long time. But then to take the chance and put his neck on the line and go to another country, to go to a top club like Napoli, and then back himself in that environment.

"It would have been so easy for him to maybe get an easier move, where it would have been a bit easier for him.

"But obviously, his performances on the pitch last year and carrying it into this year. It's just been phenomenal.

"You've got to say right now, as European football goes, he's up there with the very, very best.

"So all the credit's got to go to him, how he handles himself on and off the pitch, and the performances he's put in are of a really, really top level."

During the lavish awards do, Inter striker Francesco Pio Esposito was named Italian Golden Boy, while Conte picked up the award for best coach.

However, the night belonged to the Scottish international, who will be able to showcase his talents on a global stage next summer after playing an integral part in helping his country qualify for the World Cup.

Upon receiving his award, McTominay talked up the relationship he has formed with the city and its fans.

"It's sensational, it's incredible to be here and win this award," he said.Timothy Rogers/Getty Images

"Thank you to everyone, the team, the staff, and my teammates. My bond with Napoli is special; there are so many special places here."

McTominay won't be resting on his laurels, however, as he'll be straight back to action this weekend, when Napoli look to continue to defend their Serie A crown when they host Juventus and former boss Luciano Spalletti.
