Scott McTominay continued to show his importance to Scotland on a history-making evening by helping to book the Scots' first World Cup place since 1998.

In a tense night at Hampden Park, where the Scots needed a win over Denmark to ensure qualification, Steve Clarke's men got the job done, and it was McTominay who was once again the man to thank.

The Napoli man struck a spectaculr opening goal just three minutes into the match, to set Scotland on their way in what was a roller-coaster of an evening for the Tartan Army.

The victory means Scotland will head to the finals next summer and compete on football's global stage for the first time in nearly thirty years.

McTominay, top scorer for the Scots in their last qualifiers for Euro 2024, scored his second of this campaign and has once again been crucial to the country's cause.

It's the form that had seen him become revered in Italy, where last season he helped Napoli win Serie A and won the league's Player of the Year award, as well as earning a Ballon d'Or nomination.

It's a transformation that looked unlikely when he was part of the Manchester United midfield. Ironically, former Red Devil Alan Smith believes McTominay's displays in Serie A are exactly the kind the current United side are now craving for.

Talking exclusively to DAZN News, thanks to BestBettingSites.co.uk , reviewers of the best new betting sites , Smith said, "I look at him every time he plays in Italy, and he always seems to do unbelievably well.

"I think his pace and his power - it looks like someone that, unfortunately, Man Utd are missing.

"I’m sure, regardless of which midfield players United bought, I’m sure that United fans would rather see Kobbie Mainoo and Scott McTominay starting as two homegrown players ahead of players bought in from overseas.

"I think United regret letting McTominay leave. Sometimes you get it wrong. He might have wanted to go because he wasn't playing enough, but he's made the move and he's done exceptionally well."

The 28-year-old is already proving last year wasn't just a one-off, either. He got off the mark for Napoli in their opening day win over Sassuolo and has helped Antonio Conte's side keep up the pace in their title defence, even if, as a team they have failed to find their championship-winning form of last season.

Now he's once again the talisman for his country, on a night where Scotland needed him most. They now look forward to the draw for the group stage of the tournament, which will take place on Friday 5 December.
