While some NFL teams are gearing up for Wild Card Weekend, others are licking their wounds after firing coaches following a season that did not go to plan.

Among the latter group is the Cleveland Browns, who parted ways with former head coach Kevin Stefanski on Monday after finishing 5-12.

Browns' quarterback Shedeur Sanders, perhaps unfairly criticised at times for his lack of maturity in the way he addressed the media in the past, took the news in his stride.

"That's just how the league is," the 23-year-old told reporters on Monday after hearing the news.

Sanders' business-like response may seem slightly cold to some, but the increasingly volatile nature of the NFL means players and teams cannot become too emotionally invested in head coaches, even those who gave players like Sanders their first start in the league.

A replacement will be hired, and a new vision will follow. And Sanders, like every young quarterback before him, will have to prove himself all over again - this time to a head coach who had no hand in the process of evaluating, drafting and shaping him.

The Browns' QB is aware of the new challenge a new hire creates, adding: "building different relationships in different circumstances, situations... It’s always good to have those life goals and have those life lessons."

Sanders' 2025 tape offered reason for optimism for his and the Browns' future, but after finishing with seven touchdowns, 10 interceptions, and a 56.6% completion ratio, there's clearly plenty of room for improvement.

For now, at the very least, Sanders’ latest comments suggest growth in his media handling. And who knows, if he retains the kind of focus demonstrated here, he could earn the starting QB job in 2026 under the new regime.
