Austin “Ammo” Williams responded to his first professional loss by getting back into the win column via an emphatic knockout.
Now, the exciting middleweight returns to the ring, looking to continue to build toward a world title shot when he clashes with Canadian fighter Patrice Volny at Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida on Saturday night, live on DAZN.
Williams (17-1, 12 KOs) rebounded from a devastating 11th-round TKO loss to Hamzah Sheeraz in June by delivering a fifth-round TKO of Gian Garrido in November.
He will look to keep the highlights coming against Volny (19-1, 13 KOs), who last produced a ninth-round stoppage of Steven Butler in June.
With the stakes riding high for both fighters, DAZN News analyzes the keys to victory for Williams and Volny in this pivotal bout.
Matchroom BoxingWilliams does an excellent job of changing levels and exploding upwards with a dynamite left hand.
The southpaw has demonstrated the ability to land this as a straight punch splitting his opponents’ guards or as a left hook wrapped around them.
Williams’ ability to land this early against Volny could spell yet another stoppage win for the American middleweight.
Williams can at times be a little too lax with his guard, lowering his right hand and thus becoming susceptible to a big shot.
Showing this against Volny could have the Canadian plucking away to making this a harder fight than it needs to be for “Ammo.”
In changing levels and springing up with explosive punches, Williams would be wise to deposit some of those heavier shots into Volny’s midsection.
Softening up the Canadian’s core could very well force an open lane upstairs for “Ammo” to unload greater damage in a propelling win.
If Williams changes levels early, it is up to Volny to time the American’s rhythm and make him pay with crisp counters.
Doing this cleanly and consistently will have Volny disrupting Williams’ flow, making sure his ammunition is sputtering instead of detonating.
Volny spotting any possible lapses in Williams’ guard early could spell pesky and even damaging right hands to split “Ammo’s” defense. The more this can be achieved, the more Volny might be able to sway judges’ scorecards if this bout goes the distance.
Watch Volny’s last win and the Canadian exhibited a blunt one-two combination.
This could be used to pepper Williams especially if the American is not maintaining a disciplined guard.
If Volny senses this, as aforementioned, a left to split the guard with the right hook around it should work wonders with his chances for the upset.
