Frank Warren names the former world champion who could return and it is not Tyson Fury

Paul vs Chavez Jr - June 28 - live on DAZN PPV

Frank Warren played an instrumental role in guiding Billy Joe Saunders to a world title, but could he be the man to plot the former champion’s comeback?

Saunders was back in the headlines last month when he was selected to monitor Chris Eubank Jr’s hands being wrapped before his eagerly anticipated grudge match against Conor Benn

Eubank Jr was beaten by Saunders in 2014, and their rivalry has never really gone away meaning Benn was eager to see his most recent foe rattled by Saunders’ presence.

Instead, chaos ensued as Saunders was denied entry to Eubank Jr’s dressing room as it was revealed he did not hold the required BBBofC licence that is necessary to oversee the wrapping of a fighter’s hands.

After turning professional after the 2008 Olympics, Saunders was expertly manoeuvred by Warren who eventually delivered his man a world title shot against Andy Lee in 2015.

Saunders got the job done and in 2019 he moved up to 168lbs where he eventually won another world title by defeating Shefat Isufi.

After losing that title to Canelo Alvarez in 2021, Saunders has been inactive ever since and with that time now approaching five years, could a return be about to happen?

Warren, who knows Saunders as well as anyone in the sport, has revealed that he has spoken with his former charge about stepping back into the ring.

“He came up and saw me a couple of weeks ago, and we had a chat,” said Warren when speaking to talkSPORT

“We’ll see what happens. After a couple of fights, he feels he can get down, we’ll see.”
