Tony Yoka’s remarkable rebuild continued this weekend as the Frenchman registered his third successive win with a ten rounds points win over Arslan Yallyev.
Once considered the future of the heavyweight division after securing Olympic gold, Yoka’s professional journey appeared to be going smoothly as he scored impressive wins over respected contenders such as Dave Allen and Christian Hammer.
Disaster first struck for Yoka in 2022 when he was matched tough against Martin Bakole and was eventually defeated on points by the Congolese puncher.
Aiming to rebuild, Yoka jumped straight back into the deep end, but he would endure further setbacks as he was beaten by Carlos Takam before being outpointed narrowly by Ryad Merhy.
Despite the numerous defeats, Yoka refused to wilt and his win over Yallyev may provide him with the confidence to push on and reach the business end of the division.
With his extensive amateur pedigree and Olympic gold medal, Yoka is certain to remain a decent name in the division, but does he have enough time to fulfil his potential and reach world level?
The Paris man is now 33, which is still young in today’s heavyweight climate, but one more defeat could prove disastrous for Yoka’s ambitions.
The win over Yallyev, an impressive one considering he was previously unbeaten in 16 fights, may just be the platform that is required for Yoka to keep progressing.
