Ryan Garcia and Rolando "Rolly" Romero have never officially met inside a ring, but the headliners for "Fatal Fury in Times Square" on May 2. live on DAZN PPV worldwide, will go into their bout with a sense of familiarity.
Garcia and Romero were sparring partners earlier in the decade, with their session taking on a bit of lore as both men admit to not holding back as much as they regularly would have in a normal training setting.
"I think we sparred three years ago," Garcia said in a press conference on Tuesday. "It was a little rough sparring, I guess, but he continued to use that sparring [session] to boost up his career. Credit to his point."
Romero saw things a bit differently, stating that any claims that he used the sparring session to raise his profile are untrue.
"If I was clout-chasing, he would have had clout," Romero said. "He didn't have clout at that moment. He had didn't have anything."
Regardless, the former WBA super lightweight world champion expects big things when he faces off with Garcia in Manhattan.
"But it's just sparring," Romero added. "We're going to see in a real fight in the ring on May 2 and we're going to make it a big fight. We'll make it one of the biggest fights in U.S. history."
