Abdullah Mason is ruling out a huge shock on Feb 22 when Shakur Stevenson defends his world lightweight title against Floyd Schofield in Saudi Arabia .
The fight, part of a huge show in Riyadh, live on DAZN , will see Stevenson look to enhance his pound-for-pound reputation against one of boxing’s emerging stars.
Barring a brief flooring in his last fight against Rene Tellez Giron, Schofield has not put a step foot wrong in his professional career, but he will be facing a huge step up in class against his Stevenson.
Both from New Jersey, more than local pride will be on the line for each man as future big fights in 2025 could be next for the victor.
With lightweight currently stacked with a number of top champions and contenders , numerous possibilities exist for both fighters and that could eventually mean a showdown with Mason.
One of Top Rank’s brightest prospects, Mason has emerged as a real hope for American boxing and he will be in action the week before Stevenson vs. Schofield when he tackles Manuel Jaimes in New York.
Mason is one day hopeful of reaching the platform his division rivals currently find themselves on and he will be a keen spectator once his own fight is out of the way.
Stevenson enters the contest a big favourite and Mason believes those odds are justified when making his prediction for how things may play out.
“I feel like Shakur does what he wants in there. Kid Austin has a good style, but I don’t think it’s a style that’s ready for Shakur,” said Mason when speaking to Fighthype .
“I feel Shakur might sweep him. He might stop him. I’m not sure how he’s going to fight, but I feel he can do what he wants.
“I don’t think there’s any chance. Of course, it’s boxing, and there’s a percentage, but I don’t know what that percentage is. To me, I don’t see it.”
