Major update provided on potential Gervonta Davis vs Lamont Roach rematch
The fallout from Gervonta Davis’ controversial draw with Lamont Roach continues with the WBA president, Gilberto Mendoza now having his say.
Last weekend, Roach produced a stunning performance as he met Davis head on and enjoyed plenty of success throughout the contest.
With both men constantly on the attack, the bout delivered a high quality of entertainment, but it was overshadowed by an incident at the start of round nine.
After breaking from an exchange, Davis took a knee for a brief second before rising and walking back to his corner.
When first returning to his team, Steve Willis, the fight’s third man, began to count, a common practice when a fighter takes a knee, before stopping.
At the end of the fight when the result had been announced, Davis said that it was an issue with his eyes that promoted the unauthorised break, but that did not help Roach.
If that round was scored 10-8 then Roach would have been the victor on the scorecards ensuring his stock would have been incredibly high and likely securing bigger fights moving forward.
David appeared dismissive when talking about a rematch afterwards, but Mendoza believes it is the right fight for both men.
“I think there's not going to be no doubt about having a rematch on this,” said Mendoza when speaking to The Ring.
“This supersedes the public perception of boxing involved here with a huge star for the sport and we need to send a strong message out there. It was a very controversial night.”
