Teofimo Lopez’s potential jump to 147lbs to face Jaron Ennis is a move designed to avoid accepting a showdown with Devin Haney.
That’s the verdict of Bill Haney, Devin’s father, who is hopeful a fight between his son and Lopez can be arranged at some point.
Earlier this month, both fighters occupied a spot on the huge Times Square show in New York City, and both were victorious.
Lopez retained his WBO super-lightweight crown with a points win over Arnold Barboza before Haney was successful against Jose Ramirez.
Haney’s win was intended to set up a rematch with Ryan Garcia later this year but when he was beaten by Rolly Romero on the same show, it created doubts as to whether that contest will now take place.
Haney will have multiple options if the Gracia sequel cannot be made and it appears he is ready to face Lopez in what would be a huge encounter.
The confident New Yorker has been highly speculated to challenge Ennis for his welterweight titles, but his desire to move up in weight is not convincing everybody in boxing, most notably, Haney Sr.
“He’s acting like he’s looking for Boots. Man, knock it off,” said Haney when speaking to Tha Boxing Voice.
“You know why you looking for Boots? Because you running from Devin Haney. The biggest name for Teofimo Lopez is Devin Haney.”
