Nigel Benn shared the ring with many quality operators during his lengthy career that made him one of British boxing’s most legendary fighters.

The former world champion gripped audiences with his explosive showings as he participated in many memorable battles against the likes of Gerald McClellan and Iran Barkley.

As well as those aforementioned bouts, Benn also faced Chris Eubank twice and the pair made the boxing world stand still as they went at it non-stop in and out of the ring.

After walking away from the sport in 1996 after three consecutive losses, including two against Ireland's Steve Collins, Benn departed boxing with his head held high.

Today, the Essex man is often seen supporting his son, Conor Benn, and he was a central part of last month’s press conference to publicise the April 26 contest between Conor and Chris Eubank Jr, live on DAZN

After witnessing his son have an egg smashed in his face by Eubank Jr, Benn aimed to restore family pride by grabbing the neck of Eubank Jr, but security was very quick to intervene.

Fiery media events are familiar territory for Benn after sharing the stage with many volatile fighters during his fighting days and he looked well equipped to deal with the matter.

Looking back at his own career, and his many ferocious wars inside the ring, who does Benn consider to be the best boxer he ever faced?

“Sugar Boy Malinga springs to mind. He wasn’t the classiest of fighters, he was just my bogeyman,” said Benn when reflecting to The Ring about his two contests with the South African.

“Malinga was very difficult for me, and even though I won the first fight, I could easily have lost it. I think I got the decision because I was on home soil. In the rematch I trained so hard for him, but I was knackered and just completely jaded.

“He is one of the only fighters to really hurt me and he did it with a punch to the mouth which split my tongue and my lip. I was overtrained in the second fight, but I can’t really take anything away from him. Give me a guy who stands there and wants to fight, and I’ll be victorious, but I knew this guy was slippery.”
