Ryan Garcia vs Rolly Romero: What was the former's road to comeback bout?

Watch Garcia vs Romero live on DAZN PPV - May 2

Ryan Garcia returns to action next month with a blockbuster headline bout against Rolly Romero at The Ring's Fatal Fury Times Square live on DAZN Pay-Per-View.

The American has been out of action since his no-contest clash with Devin Haney, but hopes for an immediate rematch have been made to wait by powerbrokers.

Instead, both men will face different foes on the same bill in New York City, with the hope victory can tee them up for a second dance in the ring later on this year.

Ahead of a seismic occasion for Garcia as he strives to rebuild his reputation following time away however, DAZN News takes a look at his road to this occasion.

Ryan Garcia vs Emmanuel Tagoe - April 9, 2022

A victory over Luke Campbell in January 2021 had seen Garcia claim the WBC interim lightweight belt, and a bout with Javier Fortuna was scheduled for his first defence.

But the star withdrew from the bout, citing mental health issues, and was ruled out of a subsequent bout with Joseph Diaz later in the year too after suffering a hand injury.

He finally returned in April the following year against Emmanuel Tagoe - but despite dropping him in the second round, Garcia looked rusty as he eventually earned a points win.

Ryan Garcia vs Javier Fortuna - July 16, 2022

Having ended his year-long break with victory over the Ghanan less than only three months prior, Garcia made the move to super-lightweight in earnest for this major bout.

Fortuna, whose chequered record nevertheless spoke to his strengths as a potential spoiler, was seen by many as a serious contender to exploit some potential ring rust.

In the end, Garcia proved far too comfortable at hand for his opponent and inflicted a fourth career defeat on him, dropping him three times en-route to a sixth-round victory.

Ryan Garcia vs Gervonta Davis - April 22, 2023

The biggest test of Garcia's career at this weight came in the spring of the following year, as he was set for a pay-per-view blockbuster against the man they call 'Tank'.

Davis, a former IBF super-featherweight champion, looked to offer threat from the first bell and floored Garcia just two rounds in to leave him struggling on the canvas.

Garcia rose and continued, but never looked like he might turn it around and when he was dropped in the seventh, he failed to beat the count and suffered a first pro loss.

Ryan Garcia vs Oscar Duarte - December 2, 2023

Eight months after a maiden defeat in the ring since his amateur days, questions lingered over whether the old Garcia would re-emerge as he sought to cement his place.

Those concerned need not have worried. Against admittedly inferior opposition, Garcia put his foe to the sword inside eight impressive rounds, finishing with a superb combo.

Durate was unable to beat the count himself at the end before the bell, and with it, his opponent set himself up for what looked to be a highly promising 2024 in the ring.

There was no love lost between Garcia and his rival ahead of their blockbuster battle for the WBC super lightweight title, and controversy reined in the build-up to boot too.

The former missed weight, was deemed inelligible for the title and had to forfeit part of his purse as a wager - but in the ring, he gave a stunning turn, scoring three knockdowns.

That netted Garcia a majority decision win, but weeks later, it was ruled a no-contest after the star took a plea deal over findings of Ostarine in drug tests around the fight date.
