Fernando Vargas Jr continued his impressive climb up the rankings as he moved to 17-0 with a fourth-round victory over Gonzalo Gaston Coria in California.
Son of legendary fighter, Fernando Sr , the younger member of the family made a quiet start as he observed what his opponent was actually bringing to the fight in the early stages.
Before the fight, Vargas had demonstrated a brutal streak with the vast majority of his contest ending before the final bell.
Vargas Jr woke up in round four and, after landing several shots on Coria, he was able to drop his opponent, which forced the referee to make a sensible stoppage.
At the peak of his powers, Vargas Sr was one of boxing’s biggest attractions who raced to a world title win after representing America in the 1996 Olympics.
Defeats to Felix Trinidad and Oscar De La Hoya put serious miles on Vargas’ clock and the latter stages of his career saw him lose further contests to Shane Mosley and Ricardo Mayorga.
Now overseeing the development of his son, Fernando Sr will be hoping that his experience will be able to guide his son towards the same lofty platform he operated on.
Vargas Jr is being kept busy and if he keeps moving on this upward trajectory, it will not be long before he finds his way into the top ten at super-welterweight.
The early signs appear to be promising for Vargas Jr, but he still has some way to go before he emulates the extraordinary feats of his father.
