Gervonta 'Tank' Davis has claimed that his hair was the reason why he took a knee in the ninth round of his contest with Lamont Roach Jr.

Davis was defending his WBA lightweight title at Brooklyn's Barclays Center against Roach and it was a contest which has spawned plenty of talking points.

In round nine, Davis decided to take a knee before having his face wiped by a member of his team, but the referee chose not to rule it a knockdown.

The bout went the full 12-round distance, and was declared a majority draw after two judges scored the fight 114-114 whilst the other scored the fight 115-113 in Davis' favour.

With no knockdown ruled in round nine, Roach felt this call had a major sway on the final result and speaking after the fight, Davis explained why he took a time-out.

"I just got my hair done two days ago and she put grease in my hair," Davis said.

"When I was sweating and things like that, it burned my eyes."

The final result prompted plenty of reaction from the boxing world, including Terence Crawford who said on X that Roach had been 'robbed' of a victory
