Kambosos Jr allays injury fears ahead of Hitchins showdown
George Kambosos Jr has revealed the facial cut he suffered during his recent victory over Jake Wyllie has not affected preparations for his upcoming showdown with Richardson Hitchins, live on DAZN.
Kambosos Jr enjoyed a successful super lightweight debut after beating Wyllie by unanimous decision in his home city of Sydney on March 22.
The Aussie did not come through unscathed, however, and was left nursing a cut to his face following a nasty clash of heads with his opponent in round nine.
But in an exclusive interview with DAZN ahead of his bout with Hitchins in New York on June 19, former world champion Kambosos Jr said: “The cut’s no problem.
“Thank God it only got glued, it didn’t need stitches and was very superficial.
“It wasn’t a deep cut – obviously I’ve been cut many times in my career.
“Looking back at the fight, I was so dynamic from (round) one to eight and you could see the difference at 140lbs with the combinations.
“The old ferociousness was the back and then in round nine, a nice head clash… it bloody hurt.
“I kind of got a bit frantic because I knew the Hitchins fight [is looming] and I didn't know how bad this cut was.
“Thank God obviously it didn't open up too bad, so I went back, got it glued, and within two days I was back in training, obviously.”
Kambosos Jr has now begun full sparring after his cut fully healed as he ramps up preparations for his fight with Hitchins.
He explained: “Now that the cut is fine, we've been training very, very well; the pad work, the conditioning, everything's been good.
“And I don't see any problems leading into the fight or on Fight Night.”
