Oscar De La Hoya has seen first-hand what Canelo Alvarez is capable of inside the boxing ring after spending many years guiding the Mexican icon.

Under De La Hoya’s guidance, Canelo became one of boxing’s biggest attractions as he captured a variety of world titles under in front of huge audiences.

Following their very public split, the pair have engaged in various verbal exchanges, and it seems highly unlikely that the pair will work together again.

On May 3, in Saudi Arabia, Canelo will look to make another successful defence of his world titles at super-middleweight when he faces William Scull

The unbeaten Cuban will begin the contest a significant underdog, but he knows a win over Canelo can open the door for more big fights moving forward.

Eubank Jr v Benn

Canelo is another fighter who is constantly linked to huge bouts and if he can get past Scull then plenty of options exist for him, with another move to light-heavyweight possible.

After enjoying a brief reign as world champion at 175lbs, Canelo tried to win there again in 2022, but he was beaten by Dmitry Bivol

His former rival is now undisputed champion after recently levelling the series with Artur Beterbiev , and you also have David Benavidez and Callum Smith impressing in the weight class.

Perhaps eager to tie the score with Bivol, Canelo may consider that his next move, but De La Hoya is not convinced his former charge can beat him.

“There is no way he beats Bivol,” said De La Hoya when speaking with Fight Hub TV

“There is just no way. Styles make fights. As much as I would want to see a Mexican win inside that ring, there is no way he beats Bivol.”
