Former super middleweight world champion Caleb Plant joined a list now 60-fighters long when he lost to Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez in 2021. Only three fighters have earned rematches with Canelo, the last being Gennady Golovkin in a trilogy.

The American super middleweight faces Jose Armando Resendiz, 15-2 (11), in Las Vegas on Saturday in the first defence of his WBA interim title, with his next steps already planned out.

Plant, 23-2 (14), is lined up to face undefeated Jermall Charlo, 33-0 (22), later this year, with his rival in action on the same card this weekend.

If Plant gets past Resendiz, and Charlo is victorious over Thomas LaManna, a bout between the pair will be made before the end of 2025.

Victories against Resendiz and Charlo would cement Plant’s status as a top contender for Canelo’s belts, Álvarez is undisputed at 168 pounds. But despite a rough roadmap in mind, Plant is taking nothing for granted.

Speaking at the final press conference ahead of fight night, the 32-year-old shared: “It feels good to be back on the big stage. My team put in a lot of work and left no stone unturned and that’s gonna show on Saturday.

He added: “I’m looking to put on a show. This is a big moment for Armando, but it’s big for me too. I have a lot on the line. He may have nothing to lose, but I’ve got everything to lose. I sacrificed a lot and you’re gonna see it in the ring.”

Plant has long been vocal about his desire for a rematch with the face of boxing, renewing his interest shortly after Canelo’s victory over William Scull and the subsequent announcement of the super-bout with Terence Crawford scheduled for September.

But Plant is not the only fighter hoping to share the ring with Canelo once again.

Edgar Berlanga has shared how he has taken a fight with British super middleweight Hamzah Sheeraz in order to set-up his own route to taking on Canelo.

Berlanga, and by extension Sheeraz, will be emboldened by Turki Alalshikh’s comments during the first press conference for the fight. Boxing’s latest kingmaker stated: “This card will affect our next card. The eye of the result of Berlanga and Sheeraz is Canelo. This is a big card, an important card. This will affect boxing. Watching the result of Crawford and Canelo, Berlanga wants to put a very big statement on his first card with us.”
