Shawn Porter enjoyed a solid run at the top of boxing as he reigned as world champion during an era where the welterweight division he operated in was congested with great fighters.
Possessing an attacking quality that made him as entertaining as he was vicious, Porter’s time in boxing saw him headline events against some of the biggest names in boxing.
After becoming world champion in 2013 by upsetting Devon Alexander, Porter would lose the belt the following year after a close loss to Kell Brook.
Porter would respond well as he picked up wins over solid contenders such as Andre Berto and Adrien Broner, and he would reign as world champion again when beating Danny Garcia in 2018.
That victory allowed Porter to feature on the radar of some of boxing’s best fighters and it would not be long before he was sharing the ring with the likes of Errol Spence and Terence Crawford.
Porter would narrowly fall short against Spence when the pair collided in 2019 and after getting stopped by Crawford in 2021, Porter would not fight again.
Reflecting on his time in boxing, Porter has revealed who he considers to be the best opponent he ever faced.
“I fought Keith Thurman in his prime. His prime was versus me and Danny Garcia. After that he had injuries and a loss of focus. Thurman in his prime is an amazing boxer,” said Porter when speaking to Boxing News.
“Errol Spence Jr, can’t deny anything about that kid and then there’s Terence Crawford. He’s one of the most athletic and cerebral fighters I’ve ever been in the ring with.
“Those three guys are the cream of the crop. I take Errol out because I don’t think Errol was everything that he is now, I think he’s better now than when he fought me.
“It’s between Keith and Terence, and I think you go with Terence. I think Terence is just a little bit stronger mentally. That’s a tough one. Keith Thurman in his prime or Terence Crawford now.”
