Mikaela Mayer threatens to 'hurt' Sandy Ryan in Las Vegas rematch
Mikaela Mayer is confident that she can inflict more damage on Sandy Ryan when they meet in a rematch this Saturday in Las Vegas.
Mayer, who is the WBO women's welterweight champion, won the first encounter in September to claim the belt in what was a thrilling 10-round battle.
The rematch, which will be streamed live on ESPN+ in the US, sees Ryan out for revenge after losing to Mayer in a fight which saw the former covered in red paint before the opening bell with some believing it was a planned attack by Mayer who denied these accusations.
Speaking at Thursday's final press conference, Mayer explained why she feels a much better fighter at welterweight after being a unified champion at super feather.
“I really feel great. I feel better than ever. Many people feel that at this stage of your career, it’s hard to make that much of a jump and develop or change much. But I really do feel that I’m better than ever," Mayer said.
"I’m stronger and healthy at welterweight. I’m not really cutting weight. All my little tweaks and injuries went away. And I’ve been able to put on muscle.
“I’m sure she feels that [she will stop me]. I’m sure she felt that way in the last fight when she was saying that I’m not truly a welterweight. But I still sent her to the hospital with a concussion.
"If I did that then when I was new to welterweight, then I’m going to hurt her 10 times more this time around.”
If Mayer does manage to get past Ryan for a second time on Saturday night, there may be another British champion, Lauren Price, in her sights for an undisputed showdown after the Welsh boxing star beat Natasha Jonas to unify the WBA, WBC and IBF welterweight titles.
